The Mataram High Court in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) this week announced that it is upholding the ruling made by the Sumbawa Court to sentence an 18-year-old man to life imprisonment for murdering his girlfriend and burning her body last September.

The man, identified as Agus Purnama, had strangled his girlfriend, identified as Olive, to death last September after finding out that she had been cheating on him. He then attempted to make her disappear by setting her body on fire and then dumping it in a ditch.

Agus also took Olive’s belongings with him, including her jewelry, which he then sold. He reportedly used the money to buy drugs.

Local residents found Olive’s body not long after, promptly leading to Agus’ arrest. The 18-year-old was found guilty of Olive’s murder in May.

Agus’ legal representative then filed an appeal against the prison sentence, which has since been upheld by the higher court in Mataram.

“We uphold the ruling made by Sumbawa Court on May 7, 2020, for which an appeal was filed,” the panel of judges said.
