More than 460,000 passengers traveled through Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport in October, indicating a nearly 100 percent increase from the previous month as domestic tourism picks up at the holiday destination amid loosened COVID-19 restrictions.

Airport management firm PT Angkasa Pura I recorded a 98 percent increase in passengers in October compared to September, when Ngurah Rai served around 234,000 passengers.

Herry A Y Sikado, a general manager at the firm, said most arrivals came from Jakarta, with over 136,000 passengers, followed by Surabaya and South Sulawesi, with around 29,000 and 16,000 passengers, respectively. Most departures recorded were also bound for those three regions.

This is the highest number of passengers passing through Ngurah Rai in a month so far this year.

In mid-October, Bali Governor Wayan Koster said tourism numbers are picking up by the tens of thousands thanks to domestic holidaymakers. Though talks were centered on Bali’s international tourism at the time, domestic tourists are still playing a crucial role for the industry amid the pandemic. Officials have also expressed optimism of even better numbers in the upcoming year-end holiday.
