Mugger on Dewi Sri, Legian beaten by an angry mob before being arrested

An angry mob gave a man a beating after he allegedly snatched a woman’s phone and caused her bike to crash in Legian, Bali.

The alleged mugging occurred on Jl. Dewi Sri on Saturday night around 11 pm.

East Java woman, Ranny Desi Kurniasari, 21, was riding as a passenger on the back of a motorbike driven by her friend, Fernando Raynaldi, 23, according to local newspaper Tribun Bali

It all apparently went down when Kurniasari was on her mobile phone, when a man on a motorbike drove by and grabbed it from her, police said on Sunday. The action caused Raynaldi to lose control of the motorbike and crash, police added.

But Raynaldi’s fall also triggered the alleged mugger’s fall as well.

Seeing that the alleged mugger fell, local residents at the scene flocked together to grab him and beat him, Indonesian-street-justice style.

Police responded, arresting the alleged mugger, as well as the people in the mob who were apparently beating him.

Once secured by police, the alleged mugger was identified Ahmed Maulana, 33, from Banyuwangi. Maulana is reportedly in Kuta Police custody.

Both Kurniasari and Raynaldi only sustained minor injuries after their motorbike crashed.
