A well in a Denpasar Balinese temple will need to be drained and purified now that the alleged murder weapon used in a stabbing has been found there.
Bali police have recounted the chronology of a fatal stabbing in Denpasar on Tuesday, connecting the dots between when a mother and her two children were attacked to when the alleged perp was arrested, taking gunshots to the leg.
Police allege that their suspect, who local reports have identified as Tono, 34, fled after stabbing a woman and her son at their home in the Monang-Moning area. After spending about 12 hours hiding in a nearby temple on Jl. Kalimutu II, Tono was caught trying to make his way to his kos in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
According to investigators, after killing Suyani, 39, and critically wounding her son, Dafa, 10, Tono had been avoiding detection in Pura Tegal Timbul Gatep Manis.
While at the temple, Tono allegedly cleaned the knife he had used in the assault and cast it into a roughly three-meter deep temple well, commonly used by Hindus in ritual purification.
However, now that the weapon’s been there, the well itself apparently needs to purified.
“We will wash the well, because this is holy water. Once the perpetrator threw the bloody knife into the well, the water was no longer holy, or dirty. A mecaru ceremony should be held,” resident Hindu Priest Ketut Sudana told Tribun Bali.
After Tono was arrested, police searched the temple for evidence and the knife was taken in as evidence, reports said.
