Mother of 3 allegedly tricked Bali widower into marriage before pocketing IDR1.4 billion of his money

A Singaraja woman, accused of committing fraud up to the value of IDR1.4 billion (US$99,103) against her ex-husband, was tried at the state district court yesterday.

The defendant, a mother of three identified only as KAPY, 32, managed to convince Gilimanuk shop owner, I Gede AS, 35, that she was still ‘a girl,’ aka unmarried and childless, and gradually seduced him into wedding her.

According to a report by Bali Post, the pair were married in a traditional ceremony in 2016, while the victim was still blissfully unaware that his bride had already married in East Java and had a trio of kids to boot.

But that wasn’t the only fib she allegedly told him. She apparently also claimed to be studying medicine at a university in Yogyakarta, a story she would go back to repeatedly when trying to swindle cash.

Over the next two years, KAPY continually asked her new spouse for money, telling him it would fund various things, from beauty courses to her tuition fees. By the time she was found out, Gede had transferred a total of IDR1.4 billion into her account.

As soon as Gede uncovered his wife’s dirty secret, he reported her to the Gilimanuk Police Station and disowned her as his spouse.

At yesterday’s hearing, the woman reportedly admitted to deceiving her ex-husband by pretending to be a student, but claimed to have already divorced her Javanese husband by the time they first met.

Public Prosecutor Gedion Ardana Reswari revealed that the defendant was charged with article 378 of the Criminal Code concerning fraud, which carries a maximum possible prison term of four years, as reported by Bali Post.
