Police in Buleleng Regency are investigating allegations that a mentally handicapped woman was raped in Sawan District last week.
The parents of the 21-year-old woman filed a complaint with the police last Friday, accusing a man from their village of raping their daughter.
The parents filed the complaint on the victim’s behalf due to her handicap.
Police say they are collecting witness testimonies, including from the victim’s neighbors, who reportedly notified her parents about the rape.
“If expert testimony determines that the victim is indeed special needs, then there is possibility of [sexual] coercion in this case,” Buleleng Police Spokesman Gede Sumarjaya said yesterday.
The current condition of the handicapped woman has not been disclosed.
