A police officer in East Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) who shot dead a fellow cop on Monday might face the death penalty, as authorities continue their investigation into the harrowing case.

Artanto, a spokesman for NTB Police, told reporters today that initial findings from the investigation indicate that the suspect, identified as MN, committed murder out of jealousy.

“There’s indication that the suspect was jealous after knowing that the victim was chatting with his wife,” Artanto said.

“We are looking into it now.”

The victim, who was identified as HT, was found dead and covered in blood on Monday. An autopsy conducted shortly after confirmed that he had been fatally shot in his right chest.

According to reports, MN admitted his wrongdoing when he returned to the police station and said that he shot HT while he was on duty that morning.

As investigation into the case continues, police have yet to reveal the final charges against MN. Under Indonesia’s Criminal Code (KUHP), premeditated murder is a crime punishable by life imprisonment or the death penalty.
