Kuta hotel employee confesses to stealing Rp 4.5 million in Japanese Yen from guest: police

A Kuta hotel employee has been jailed for stealing around 43,000 Yen (Rp 4.5 million) from a hotel guest.

Kuta Police Chief Comr. Wayan Sumara said that Banyuwangi man Esa Tirtanaya, 20, was arrested on Monday for the alleged theft at Aquarius Star Hotel on Jl. Legian.

“It started with a foreign guest’s report, who claimed to have lost money amounting to 43,000 Yen from inside the hotel room where he was staying. From the testimony of the complainant, he put the money down on the bed then left for breakfast,” Tribun Bali quoted Sumara as saying on Tuesday.

Police say they investigated the scene of the crime and found there had been no forced entry.

After identifying Tirtanaya as a suspect, police questioned the man.

“At first, he was evasive, but after we persisted, he confessed,” Sumara said.

From questioning Tirtanaya, police say they learned that he used a master key from reception to get into the Japanese guest’s room. Then, Tirtanaya knocked on the door and when there was no response, he entered the room and took the money that was in a bag on the bed, according to police.

“The money traded for about Rp 4.5 million. After stealing, the suspect went directly to a money changer. The money has been seized as evidence,” Sumara said.
