Kartini Day honored in Bali with ladies surfing in kebayas

Women will be surfing, donning the traditional Indonesian kebaya in Kuta on Thursday to recognize Kartini Day.

The holiday, which actually falls on Friday, commemorates national heroine Raden Adjeng Kartini, widely hailed as the country’s first feminist—so it’s only fitting that women in Bali will be shredding waves in her honor.

The Indonesian Surfing Association (INSA) announced the idea, which they say came from surf mag Magic Wave Bali, on Tuesday.

“I appreciate how it will be spotlighting surfing, because Indonesia is famous for having many places to surf. So there’s tremendous potential for Indonesia to get attention in the international arena,” INSA president, Made Supatra Karang, said during a press conference at Bliss Surfer Hotel.

Head to Kuta on Thursday for what we expect will be some truly iconic shots.

Correction: The Bali Magic Wave event is being held on Thursday, not on the actual Kartini Day, which is Friday.
