Working on a public tip-off, police seized 290 ecstasy pills and 130.58 grams of methamphetamine from the belongings of Arif Efendi at his boarding house near Jl. Tukad Petanu in South Denpasar on Saturday night.

Efendi had reportedly got involved in the illegal drug trade two months ago as a means to pay for his wedding in 2019. According to an article in Tribun Bali, his previous income as a salesperson of electrical goods simply wasn’t sufficient to pay for the ceremony.

Following the arrest, which was carried out by officers of Badung Narcotics Investigation Unit, Efendi claimed that he had obtained the illicit goods from someone inside a prison in Bali.

“In accordance with the temporary confession of the suspect, the operation is controlled from within prison,” said Badung Deputy Police Chief Commissioner Sindar Sinaga to Jawa Pos. In fact, just two days before the arrest, Efendi had reportedly collected an ecstasy package with 500 pills which was partially distributed.

Police questioning revealed that Efendi would receive a reward of IDR 50,000 (US$3.44) for each successful transaction, with an average of ten sales per day.
