A Bali court has sentenced a German man to 10 years prison for carrying drugs onto the Indonesian island.
Siegfried Karl Achim Ruckel heard his penalty before a panel of judges in Denpasar District Court on Thursday.
“The defendant is guilty of possessing and carrying drugs such as methamphetamine and heroin,” Judge Ni Made Purnami said, while reading out the decision.
“He is sentenced to imprisonment for ten years and a fine of IDR1 billion (US$69k). If he does not pay the fine, an additional time of seven months in prison,” Purnami said, as quoted by Okezone.
The decision is actually lightest than the prosecutor’s demands of 15 years, a IDR1 billion fine or an additional 10 months.
The 55-year-old was found carrying 7.09 grams of heroin and 2.57 grams of methamphetamine into Bali from Berlin on January 26, 2018.
Customs officers were suspicious of the German’s movements and carried out an in-depth examination of Ruckel and his mother, when they found heroin and meth.
The German was convicted under Article 113 Paragraph 2 of Indonesia’s Law no. 35 no. 2009 concerning narcotics.
A popular tourist destination, Bali is a choice destination for traffickers and recreational users. In July alone this year, three foreigners were arrested at the airport in separate cases over attempted drug smuggling.
