Garuda Indonesia has officially opened up a new route from Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport to the capital of Sichuan Province, Chengdu.

The Indonesian flag carrier is expanding its China service with the route, as the Middle Kingdom has overtaken Australia as the biggest source of foreign tourists traveling to Bali.

“The Chinese market is important in the expansion of the international market by Garuda Indonesia, which hopes to grab a significant share of the huge market,” Garuda’s Commerical and Information Technology director, Nina Sulistyowati, told Antara Bali.

Garuda had a 25 percent share of the flights between China and Indonesia in 2016, a figure that the airline is optimistic will rise this year, according to Sulistyowati.

The Denpasar-Chengdu service will run four times a week with flights on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday on an Airbus A330-300, while return flights from Chengdu to Denpasar will operate on Tuesday, thursday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Flights out of Bali that Garuda already offers include routes to Beijing, Guangzhou, and Shanghai.

Chinese travelers seeking to travel beyond Bali to destinations like Yogyakarta, Makassar, Manado, and Labuan Bajo can also take advantage of Garuda’s service and get domestic connecting flights, says the airline.
