Just because he’s next in line for the firing squad doesn’t mean Bali Nine Australian on death row Andrew Chan has resigned to brooding in his prison cell and waiting for his life to end.

The drug convict reportedly proposed to his Indonesian girlfriend Febyanti Herewila when he found out his clemency bid had been tossed out by President Joko Widodo in January earlier this year.

There must be nothing like having an imminent expiration date on your life to inspire those carpe diem moments.

According to News Corp Australia, the couple met in May 2012 through a mutual friend, bonding over their Christian faith since “Feby” visited Kerobokan prison as a pastor and Chan was also involved in theological studies and eventually ordained this February.

Herewila, originally from Yogyakarta, says her love for Chan is real and not because she pities him.

“I love him for who he is. And I see what he does for other people and that makes me love him more,” Herewila said, as quoted by News Corp.

“If you ask me why do I love him, it’s because he also has weaknesses as well but he also has a lot of good things about him. I accept him the way he is. I am also very proud of him.”

Reports have not actually said though if the pair can realistically go through with their union given Chan’s “end of the line” situation. But, Chan and his fiance have reportedly discussed the prospect of having children and their dreams of one day opening a community center to help underprivileged children.

Chan and his fellow Bali Nine Australian on death row, Myuran Sukumaran, were transported from Bali to their anticipated execution site, Nusakambangan prison island in central Java, last week.

It’s not clear when exactly the two will be executed, but the administration has been adamant that it will not grant mercy to the Bali Nine pair.
