Grab those mosquito zapper rackets and your citronella candles because dengue fever season has officially arrived in Bali and Bali’s health office is asking residents to stay vigilant in fighting off the little blood-suckers.
It’s a new year and now we’re faced with a new wave of mosquitoes waiting to infect us if we’re not careful!
Up until December 3, 1015, as many as 27 deaths in Bali from the mosquito-borne virus were recorded last year, reports Tribun Bali.
Head of Bali’s Provincial Health Office, Dr. Wira Sunerta says there were 9,826 total cases of dengue fever on record in 2015, across the island.
Of all the regions, Gianyar regency had the most cases, reaching 2,032 cases and a death toll of six for the year.
“Gianyar still had the most cases, followed by Buleleng, with 1,915 cases and Badung had 1,744 cases,” he told Tribun Bali.
Meanwhile, Denpasar had 1,540 cases, but the death toll was higher, with the virus claiming 13 people’s lives.
Sunerta says the high numbers of dengue cases is in large part to inadequate mosquito eradication methods.
He added that most deaths with the virus occur when patients are too slow to seek medical attention and don’t receive treatment in time.
