Chinese tourist falls to her death at Tanah Lot after taking selfies

A Chinese tourist reportedly died from head injuries when falling from a cliff at Pura Batu Bolong in the Tanah Lot area of Tabanan, Bali.

Chinese woman Qi Ruiling, 57, was said to have been taking selfies with fellow Chinese tourist Zeng Fang, 57, when they both fell 15 meters down into the sea, according to Tribun Bali

With the immediate help of members of local search and rescue, Fang, who fell into the ocean and survived the fall, was able to be saved after being rushed to the nearest hospital. Fang reportedly suffered from head injuries and a broken wrist, but was lucky to come out of it all alive.

But Ruiling’s injuries were apparently too serious as she reportedly died at the scene.

Such a tragic way to start the New Year in Bali. There’s nothing wrong with taking a few selfies to document your trip around Bali, but please prioritize being aware of your surroundings and exercising caution over bringing home some good photos.

Editor’s Note: An earlier version of this story reported that it was a husband and wife couple who fell from the cliff together. This article has since been edited for accuracy.
