A 34-year-old Canadian man has suffered heavy injuries after falling off a bridge in South Kuta while taking a selfie, an official has said.

SAH was found in critical condition below Mamo Suluban Bridge in Pecatu Village on Saturday evening. It was reported that the victim plunged some 50 meters after losing his footing.

Denpasar Search and Rescue Agency Head I Gede Darmada said that his team received a tip from witnesses who were concerned after seeing a black motorbike parked by the bridge with the engine still running at around 6:15pm on Saturday.

“We immediately dispatched our team there and we located the victim’s body at the bottom of the cliff,” said Darmada.

Nine members of the agency were tasked with evacuating Hadar and it took them about two hours to bring him to safety. Hadar reportedly suffered bruises and wounds all over his body while his left arm was broken from the fall. He was immediately rushed to the Jimbaran Hospital for intensive care.

“Our initial guess is that the victim fell off the bridge after taking a selfie. This is because many other travelers did so on the bridge, usually in the afternoon [for the sunset],” Darmada added.

Darmada said that SAH might have hit some trees on the way down, thus somewhat softening his fall.

“If he directly crashed into the bottom of the cliff, [there would be a] slim chance that he would survive,” he said.
