As the saying goes: don’t bite the hand that feeds you. A 43-year-old man from Buleleng has been arrested for robbing his relative, despite the victim often lending a hand whenever he was in a jam.

Tejakula Police Chief Ida Bagus Astawa told reporters yesterday that the suspect, GKK, stole from MP, 57, a single parent who is related to the suspect.

“The suspect often asked the victim to help him out and the victim often lent him money because they’re relatives,” Astawa said.

The crime took place on May 26 at around 9pm when the victim was home alone, with her child out in Denpasar at the time. Knowing that MP was by herself, GKK entered her house through an unlocked door.

MP, who was in the bathroom at the time, did not realize that GKK had snuck behind her as she was about to flush the toilet. The suspect immediately covered her mouth with force until she fell unconscious on the toilet.

After regaining consciousness and composing herself, MP looked into her bag and noticed that IDR25 million (US$1,714) of cash was gone.

It did not take long for the police to apprehend GKK, who confessed that he buried the cash in his backyard. He told the authorities that the plan was to use the money for daily needs and to pay off his debts, including money he owes to the victim.

Under Indonesian law, GKK may face 12 years in prison for theft.
