A Briton’s attempt to rev away with a prized custom motorbike came to a screeching halt in Canggu.

The suspect, identified as 43-year-old GTAW from England, was caught on CCTV camera on Monday afternoon hopping on a customized Yamaha Scorpio motorbike that was parked outside automotive and lifestyle store Deus Ex Machina in Canggu.

The store management also said GTAW dined and dashed from the store.

The North Kuta Police said they located GTAW at Desa Tibubeneng and arrested him around eight hours after the theft. The motorbike was recovered.

“Right now, there is just one suspect [for the theft],” North Kuta Police Chief Commissioner Putu Diah Kurniawandari said, adding that CCTV footage showed three men dropping off GTAW at the Deus Ex Machina store before he carried out the theft.

It doesn’t seem like GTAW planned the theft, as police said he came across the motorbike with its key left in the ignition when it was parked outside the store.

Police have not announced criminal charges against GTAW as of this article’s publication. Under Indonesian law, theft is punishable by up to five years in prison.
