A British man allegedly smashed a beer glass over the head of a fellow customer at the Red Carpet Champagne bar in Seminyak’s popular Jl. Kayu Aya late on Sunday night.

The victim, 44-year old Australian national Mark Ryan, had accidentally bumped the Brit upon sitting down, thus provoking the violent outburst, according to a report by Bali Post.

The accused, British tourist Alasdair Ross, is believed to have not previously been acquainted with Ryan.

“He [Ross] hit the victim twice in the ear with a glass, striking the left temple and tearing the skin. The victim had to be taken to the Siloam Hospital,” said North Kuta Police Chief I Dewa Putu Gede Anom Danujaya to Kumparan yesterday.

Ryan, a family man who lives and works in Bali, was reportedly released from the hospital hours after the incident. But, presumably due to the head injuries sustained during the attack, Ryan collapsed on Wednesday and was rushed to intensive care, as reported by Australian news outlet, 9news.

According to the source, Ryan is still in a critical condition and is currently undergoing treatment at Siloam Hospital once again.

Meanwhile, Ross has been arrested and is being detained at the North Kuta Sub-District Police Headquarters. The broken glass has been taken as evidence.

According to Kumparan, Ross was charged with Article 351 paragraph 2 of the Criminal Code concerning aggravated assault and could face five years in prison.
