Imported fruits are apparently being used more and more commonly in Balinese ceremonies in this age of globalization.

Ceremonies are a major aspect of Balinese Hindu culture and offerings often take the form of fruit.

To give local fruit a fighting chance against the imported stuff, Desa Adat, traditional villages in Bali in charge of cultural affairs, should work with farmers to support homegrown fruit and build up supply, says Badung DPRD (regional councilman) Made Ponda Wirawan.

“Local fruits are high value commodities and unique to each region,” he explained, as quoted by Bali Post.

The effort needs to be on a village-level to keep it practical, so local fruit can be readily available to meet the needs of a community’s ceremonies, according to Wirawan. The councilman suggested the use of a bylaw to cement his vision.
