A Balinese man has died while swimming in the crater lake of Lombok’s Mt. Rinjani.

The Kintamani man had been doing a multi-day trek at the volcano.

“After two long days of trekking over difficult terrain, a joint team from Basarnas and SAR Search and Rescue successfully evacuated the body of Wayan Suta Asmarajaya, 45, to the Rinjani 3 post in Sembalun Village, East Lombok,” Basarnas spokesman Putu Cakra Negara said, as quoted by the Tribun network.

Asmarajaya had set off with a group of 18 others on Thursday to begin the climb. It was on Saturday around 5pm when he was swimming alone at Lake Segara Anak at the crater. He started to shout for help, but by the time any of his companions heard him and could reach the lake from their tents, Asmarajaya had already drowned and his friends couldn’t even find the man’s body, says Negara.

The Basarnas Mataram office received the report of the man’s drowning and disappearance on Sunday evening around 11:35pm. Following the report, two rescue teams were dispatched to conduct a search.

The victim’s body was finally found on Tuesday around 11:40am, not floating too far from the scene. The body was evacuated down through the Sembalun route of the mountain.
