Bali transport alliance drivers protest Grab and Uber in Renon

Hundreds of Bali drivers, members of local transport alliances, set up in front of the regional council and marched down to the governor’s office on Wednesday morning in Denpasar to protest ride-hailing apps Uber Grab, and now GoCar (from Gojek).

Protesters demanded a harsh crackdown of the apps operations in Bali, that they claim are offering dangerously low fares.

“We demand firm legal action be taken related to the operation of Uber and Grab in Bali,” Persotab (Bali Taxi Driver Association) Chairman Ketut Witra said on Wednesday, as quoted by Tribun Bali

According to the local paper, protesters also demanding that a legal team get on the case, since the deadline for license completion under Ministerial Decree No. 32/2016 is October 1, 2016.

However, to protesters’ dismay, they were apparently not received by any members of the DPRD (regional council), during their demo.

“If on October 3, there is no agreement from the government, we will get together again and take a stand on the demolition of Grab and Uber in Bali,” Witra said.

Though Uber, Grab, and Gojek have been operating in Bali in a sort of grey area while the government works out what to do with the controversial apps, many neighborhood groups of drivers have made their own “ban” of the apps. From Uluwatu to Canggu, you can find signs saying the apps simply “aren’t allowed” here. Groups of angry drivers are ready to enforce their “ban”, quick to chase off non-recognized drivers (who appear to be working from an app) from their turf.
