It was the beginning of an unconventional sort of ‘catch and release’ tale on Saturday for two sharks found off of Sanur’s Metasari beach. The sharks, netted by fishermen were allegedly rescued and put in “shark rehabilitation,” a surprisingly eco-conscious move at a time when sharks are often killed off in a flash by fishermen.
The NGO Bali Sharks posted this status detailing the feel good sharks tale on their Facebook page yesterday:
Similar to Bali Sharks’ mission, moves are also being made to transform the culture surrounding sharking fishing in Lombok. There, fishermen are starting to turn away from shark hunting and are beginning to offer boat tours instead. What a relief to hear a story where sharks are neither antagonized nor overfished.
