Prosecutors at the Denpasar Court yesterday demanded that two men, identified as M. Dani and Muhammad Ikhsan, be sentenced to 17 years in prison each for attempting to smuggle around 1 kilogram of shabu (crystal meth) into Bali in March.

According to local media outlets, both Dani and Ikhsan were arrested in March at Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport. The pair reportedly flew in from Medan, North Sumatra, and had hidden the drugs inside the sole of their sandals; each of which contained around 250 grams of shabu.

“Based on their confession, they had been instructed to bring the shabu from Medan to Denpasar. It was supposed to be handed over to another person and they were promised IDR 50 million (USD 3,507),” Prosecutor Ni Nyoman Martini said, as reported by Tribun-Bali.

Dani and Ikhsan were set to hand over the drugs to a man named I Putu Mas Wira Adi Kusuma, also known as Gus Mas, once they arrived in Bali, Tribun-Bali reported in July.

According to the same report, Gus Mas was sentenced to eight years in prison in July after he was found guilty of violating the country’s 2009 Law on Narcotics for possessing 105 pills of ecstasy. Gus Mas was arrested in early March after authorities received information about him from Dani and Ikhsan.

Martini asked the judges at the Denpasar Court to sentence Dani and Ikhsan to 17 years in prison and a fine of IDR 2 billion (USD 140,292) each. The next session in their trial is scheduled to take place next week.
