Bali police reportedly stopped smugglers from illegally exporting coral reefs, which are severely endangered in Indonesia, on Monday.

The coral reefs had come from Bima, Sumbawa and had been found by police at a warung in Gianyar, Bali, being stored in four boxes.

Of the reefs, 12 had died, while 74 were still alive when police found them.

Police suspect the coral reefs were meant to be exported abroad, but apparently no one came to claim the reefs as police surveilled the scene.

“We were getting reports about the discovery of different types of coral reefs stored at a warung, in the Ketewel area of Gianyar, but no one had taken the reefs,” Bali Water Police Director Sr. Comr. Sukandar said, as quoted by Sindo News

Sukandar said police have previously made similar findings to the reefs, at a different crime scene.
