Yesterday, the Bali Police set a new record with the Indonesian Museum of Records (MURI) by having their officers hold up an epically long Indonesian flag in the famed Jatiluwih rice terraces located in Tabanan regency.

According to a statement issued by the Bali Police, 1,700 police officers took part in the record-setting event by holding up the 1,945-meter long Indonesian flag. The event was organized to mark the 74th Independence Day of Indonesia, which falls on August 17.

Members of the Indonesian military (TNI) and religious figures also took part in the patriotic event.

“NKRI [the Unitary State of Indonesia] is TNI, the National Police and religious figures, who are a unifying force of the Indonesian nation,” the police said in the statement.

According to chief of Bali Police, Petrus R. Golose, Jatiluwih was chosen as the venue for the event due to its fame as a tourist attraction and because the terraced rice fields symbolize prosperity. In addition, Petrus noted that Jatiluwih is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The event broke the record for the longest flag held up in a rice field, according to Yusuf Madri, who is a senior manager at MURI.

“Flag unfurling happens a lot, but this one is unique because it’s the first one to take place in a rice field,” Yusuf said, as quoted by Tribun-Bali.
