The Bali Provincial Government says it’s still considering introducing a tax for tourists on the island — with funds collected going towards environmental and cultural preservation — after proposals for the levy were made earlier this year.

According to Bali Governor I Wayan Koster, details about the planned tourist tax, which local officials are calling a “contribution fee”, are still being worked out, but he said it was important to get tourists involved in conserving the Island of Gods.

“In accordance with our vision, Nangun Sat Kerthi Loka Bali (developing and conserving Bali), it is appropriate for tourists visiting Bali to help conserve the nature and culture of Bali,” Governor I Wayan Koster said in a meeting yesterday evening, as quoted by Antara.

Governor Koster said tourists would get benefits worth the contribution fee, the amount of which is not yet determined, though reports from earlier this year suggested that the tourist tax would be around US$10.

“This is a part of a tourism standard that will be established in Bali, where tourists can get total satisfaction from accommodations, food, down to insurance. Bali must be the first and serve as an example of this kind of regulation, there will be benefits for tourists and the province, that’s for sure,” Koster continued.

His statement was supported by the head of the Bali Tourism Department AA Gede Yuniartha, who said the implementation of tourist contribution fee has been widely imposed by other countries.

“[The tourist contribution fee] has long been imposed in Europe, and the cost of tourism in Bali is considered cheap by visiting tourists,” Yuniartha said.
