The Udayana Military Command has launched an investigation after a 21-year-old soldier died by suicide on Tukad Bangkung bridge in Badung regency over the weekend.

The victim, identified by his initials INT, was found hanged from a pole on top of the bridge on Saturday afternoon, with authorities saying that he died about six hours before his body was discovered. A team from the Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) evacuated him immediately, and it was later revealed that the deceased was a military officer.

Antonius Totok Yuniarto P, a spokesman from the Udayana Military Command, said that the investigation into INT’s suicide will involve different units of the military.

“This is so we can find out the reason, there must be a reason why [he died by suicide],” Totok said yesterday.

“From the Military Command, we will conduct an evaluation so such thing will happen again.”

Indonesia currently does not have a fully functioning government-run suicide prevention hotline, but if you or anyone you know is suffering from depression and/or contemplating suicide, you can get more information and resources from several local NGOs dealing with mental health and suicide prevention, such as intothelightid.org and Bali-based Love Inside Suicide Awareness (LISA) helpline at +628113855472.
