A man was killed and a woman is in critical condition after they were stabbed repeatedly in Gianyar Regency on Monday evening, over allegations that they were involved in an extramarital relationship.
At 7pm that day, 36-year-old J was at a phone credit kiosk owned by a woman identified as KS. The woman’s husband, 36-year-old NW, who believed that J and KS were having an affair, went to the kiosk carrying a sickle.
While J was chatting with KS over the counter, witnesses recalled NW brandishing his sickle and screaming, “You bastard! You’re having an affair with my wife!”
NW then stabbed J in the back twice using the weapon. The hook end of the sickle came off the handle and was firmly wedged in J’s back as he fled to safety to a nearby rice field.
Blinded by rage, NW also stabbed his wife a reported 32 times with a pocket knife.
Both J and KS were eventually taken to hospital. KS is reportedly still in critical condition, while J succumbed to his injuries the next morning.
NW was soon arrested, and told the police that he had audio recording of an intimate conversation between J and KS. While he said he regrets stabbing his wife, he was incredulous after having learned about J’s death, saying, “No way he died. I only [stabbed him twice].”
NW has so far been charged with murder, which carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison. Police say more evidence is needed to charge him with premeditated murder, which is punishable by the death penalty.
