Two Balinese women are reportedly in critical condition after one of them was accused by her husband of having an extramarital lesbian affair.

I Gede Suartama, 29, is now in police custody after he stabbed 37-year-old Ni Kadek Cariani multiple times, allegedly out of jealousy, in the Sukawati sub-district of Gianyar Regency on Wednesday evening. To the police, Suartama confessed that he suspected Kadek to have been having an affair with his estranged wife, 24-year-old Ni Luh Yudiani.

According to the police, Suartama and Yudiani have been married for two years and have one child together, but they have been living separately for some time, with the husband living in Sanur, South Denpasar while Yudiani lives in Batubulan Village, Sukawati sub-district.

“The assault was motivated by jealousy, because the suspect had been asking his wife to have sexual intercourse, but she always refused for the last two-and-a-half months. Because of her refusal, the suspect was suspicious that something was happening to his wife,” Gianyar Police Crime Unit Chief Commissioner Adjutant Deni Septiawan told reporters yesterday, as quoted by Bali Post.

Police say Suartama attempted to contact Yudiani, but she avoided him. He then followed Yudiani on Wednesday evening, and was angered to find that she went into Cariani’s house and heard his wife say, “Honey, I’m home.”

“Because of the greeting, the suspect broke in and stabbed the victim using a kitchen knife,” Deni said.

Cariani was stabbed four times in total; one time each in the stomach, neck, nape of the neck, and the back. Suartama also went on to hit Yudani multiple times after she was able to fight off her attempts to stab. Yudani suffered a wound in her head after being punched by her husband.

Both Cariani and Yudani, who are in critical condition, are currently undergoing medical treatment in Sanglah Hospital, Denpasar.

Neighbors reported Suartama’s violent act to the police after hearing noises coming out of the house and he was arrested not far from the crime scene that evening. Suartama has been charged with assault leading to serious injuries, and could face up to seven years in prison if convicted.
