A farmer in Bali found the body of a baby on Monday morning in Payungan, Gianyar, initially mistaking it for a dead animal.
“It was found this morning when the witness was looking for bamboo stalks to cook on her husband’s moorland,” Gianyar Police Superintendent Waluya told Detik on Monday.
While collecting the bamboo stalks, the woman noticed the body and thought it was a dead animal. When she got back home, she informed her husband about the body and told him where it was located, police said.
“The second witness (the husband), checked the crime scene and was surprised to see the body was a male infant,” Waluya said.
After the horrifying discovery was reported, local police arrived with a medical team, which says the body could not have been there for more than a day. The umbilical was reportedly still attached to the baby.
Payungan Police are coordinating with Gianyar Police to investigate the case and track down the baby’s mother, who apparently abandoned her own newborn.
