A 21-year-old American national was arrested for allegedly smuggling cannabis-infused chocolate cake into Bali in a care package sent from his home country.

“The suspect knew that marijuana is illegal in Indonesia so he tried to disguise it in the form of a cake. It was made in his country and sent by the suspect’s family,” I Putu Agus Arjaya from the Bali chapter of the National Narcotics Agency (BNNP), said yesterday.

The suspect, identified by his initials JOPDV, is a college student from Puerto Rico. According to reports, he is currently doing an internship in Bali, where he has been for the last six months.

Police said they received a tip-off from the public about an incoming delivery of a cannabis-infused cake, which officers duly intercepted. The cake was then examined and found to have contained marijuana, and JOPDV was subsequently arrested on June 25.

“The weed cake was for his own consumption, based on what we’ve gathered there is no indication that he was going to invite other people. Based on his own statements he has been consuming weed for two years,” Agus explained.

Under Indonesia’s 2009 Narcotics Law, JOPDV faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.
