An East Java man was stopped in Bali with over a kilo of meth and 501 ecstasy pills that are allegedly from Malaysia.

KA, 30, was arrested in front of a mosque on Jl. Cokroaminoto, North Denpasar on Wednesday.

“We’re still investigating how the drugs cleared the airport from Malaysia. The suspect, KA, claims to have been given Rp 50 million to deliver the drugs to Bali. KA is originally from Banyuwangi and is unemployed,” Bali Police spokesman  Sujarwoko said on Friday, as quoted by the Bali Post.

According to Sujarwoko, an investigation had been conducted two weeks prior to KA’s arrest. Police had received intel that there would be a large number of narcotics shipments to Bali, so they amped up surveillance around the scene. When KA got off the bus on Wednesday, he was immediately arrested.

When searching through the suspect’s luggage, police found a cardboard box that had snack packaging containing just over a kilo of meth and coffee packaging that contained more meth, along with 501 ecstasy pills.

“KA is a part of an transnational drug network from Malaysia to Bali,” police spokesman Heng Widjaja said.

KA is in violation of Article 114 paragraph 2 and Article 112 paragraph 2 under Indonesia’s Law No. 35 of 2009 on Narcotics, since he was found with over one kilo of a class 1 narcotics, according to Widjaja. The possession charge carries a minimum sentence of five years with a max of 20 years, while the dealing charge carries a much more severe punishment: a minimum imprisonment of six years, but a max punishment of death or life imprisonment.
