Two out of nine people struck by lightning in East Bali passed away on Sunday.

The lightning struck around 2pm in Tulamben, Karangasem. A group of workers had been harvesting nuts, when heavy rains started coming down so the group took shelter in a hut.

But all nine were hit, with I Wayan Tebeng, 70, and Ni Nyoman Bawak, 35, passing away at the scene.

While victims hit by lightning can get third degree burns, cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death in lightning strike victims. Seizures, respiratory arrest, and severe brain damage are also possible outcomes of getting struck.

Karangasem Police Chief Supt. Gede Ardana confirmed the incident with Bali Post and said the seven others are currently being treated at a clinic in Kubu.
