Seven Willys Jeep SUVs were trapped in a flash flood in Unda River in Bali’s Klungkung regency following heavy rain in the area on Sunday, with a number of people later rescued by local authorities.

On Sunday, a community group known as Bali Willys Club was celebrating its anniversary by distributing masks for free to local residents. Afterwards, they regrouped under a bridge and parked their cars there, but they were caught by surprise when the water levels rose at around 5pm as they were trying to cross the previously shallow river with their vehicles.

The currents eventually became too strong that some of the drivers and passengers got out of their classic SUVs to reach safety. Bystanders and a local media outlet caught scenes from the evacuation, which you can see in the videos below:

Putu Widiada, an official from Klungkung’s Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), said that one car was trapped in the middle of the river, whereas six other cars were trapped by the riverside. Officials managed to evacuate the six cars pretty quickly, safe for one which was evacuated at 9pm with a tow truck from Denpasar.

“We urge the public to be cautious, especially when they are near a river, because once it starts to rain the water can start rising,” Widiada said.

There were no reports of any injuries nor severe damages to the multi-terrain SUVs.
