A huge fire destroyed dozens of shops at the Mengwi traditional market in Badung Regency yesterday evening, with losses estimated to be in the billions of rupiah.

Authorities said the blaze erupted at 8:20pm, destroying 56 clothing shops in the market complex.

Officials have estimated up to IDR4 billion (US$254,240) in financial losses from the fire.

Twelve firetrucks were deployed to the location. The fire was eventually put out at around 9:20pm.

Thankfully, there were no reports of human casualties in the incident.

Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the fire, though witnesses say they heard an explosion coming from a shop before fire spread throughout the market.

In 2017, a shop selling incense in Mengwi traditional market was destroyed in a fire. Luckily, the fire was quickly contained and did not spread to other shops back then.
