A 35-year-old fish farmer was found dead at Lake Batur in Kintamani, Bali, yesterday afternoon. Authorities suspect he fell off his boat and had difficulty swimming because he was fully-clothed and wearing boots, causing him to drown.

“We strongly suspect that the victim fell to the lake while he was setting up fishing nets. And because he was wearing jackets, long pants and boots, we suspect that he had difficulty swimming,” said police chief inspector I Dewa Made Rencana from the Bangli Police, as quoted by Tribun-Bali.

Local media outlets cited family members as saying that the victim, identified as Wayan Sukarsa by Bali’s Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), had been a good swimmer.

Sukarsa and his father, I Nengah Parta, reportedly began their day at 5am yesterday and went about their daily routine of setting up fishing nets in Lake Batur. They’d been covering two separate areas, and it was at about 7am when Parta noticed that Sukarsa’s boat was unmanned.

That prompted local residents and authorities to immediately launch a search mission, and they were eventually assisted by a team from Basarnas. About seven hours after he went missing, Basarnas finally found Sukarsa’s body.

At around 2.45pm, we finally located Wayan Sukarsa but he was already dead, his body had been stuck to an iron hook,” Basarnas Bali said in a statement received by Coconuts Bali.
