Police have arrested two men and are in pursuit of another after they attempted to abduct a man in Denpasar, the clip of which has widely circulated on social media.

The victim, identified as 28-year-old MPWM, reportedly fell for a car sale scam. Following a meeting on Monday afternoon, the suspects attempted to abduct MPWM with a car.

The viral video showed three men forcibly pulling the victim, who was wearing a red shirt, and trying to toss him into a car. On several occasions, the perpetrators can be seen hitting the victim.

Though MPWM initially decided to not press charges, he eventually filed a police report. Officers from the North Denpasar sub-precinct have now arrested two of the perpetrators, while another is still on the run as of yesterday.

Police have yet to release further details regarding the incident, although an early post of the video wrote that MPWM made a down payment of IDR50 million (US$3,521) to the alleged scammers and agreed to meet up with them to finalize the purchase. This was followed with the attempted abduction, during which MPWM’s phone was also stolen from him.

Under Indonesia’s Criminal Code (KUHP), blatant violent assault resulting in minor injuries is punishable by up to 7 years in prison.
