One woman died and a man is still missing after they were swept away by a wave yesterday afternoon in Kelingking Beach, Nusa Penida.

According to a statement issued by the Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) in Bali, 22-year-old Nur Aisyah visited Kelingking Beach at around 3:30pm, along with a friend identified as Ifriani, and a guide, Putu Suasta.

Aisyah and Ifriani went closer to the waters to take pictures at around 5pm, and the former got swept away by a big wave that came suddenly.

“The victim was not good at swimming and can be briefly heard crying for help,” Basarnas Bali Chief, Gede Darmada, said.

While Ifriani and Putu tried to help her, the latter also got swept away by another wave and went missing. Aisyah’s body was recovered at around 5:30pm with the help of local residents.

With Kelingking Beach situated beneath a cliff, it took authorities several hours to evacuate the victim to the top. A little after midnight, she was promptly taken to a local hospital.

As of this morning, Basarnas is still conducting a search for Putu.
