Are we still not over talking about Schapelle Corby? The answer for Australians is apparently, ‘Not by a long shot.’

The latest gossip in the Australian press is that Oscar-winner Nicole Kidman wants to play the newly repatriated convicted drug smuggler.

Australian tabloid New Idea is buzzing that Kidman approached “key Hollywood bosses” to fix a “secret deal” so she can play Corby on the silver screen.

“She’s approached some of the key bosses in Hollywood already – they don’t really know about Schapelle’s case, however Nicole has been winning them over,” the magazine quoted an “insider” as saying.

The magazine further claims that the Australian actress has “always been fascinated” by Corby’s case.

“Nicole sees this as BangkokHilton 2.0. That was the TV mini-series that made Nicole a star all those years ago, and she can’t help but see the parallels in Schapelle’s case and her character’s story in BangkokHilton – so she’s always been fascinated,” the source said.

While Kidman’s reps seem to have been totally quiet about the chatter of this potential new role, it at least does turn out that Bangkok Hilton, where Kidman got her big break, had a pretty similar plot to Corby’s case. Australian girl tricked into carrying drugs gets locked up abroad—well, Corby was found guilty in 2005 over the 4.2 kg of cannabis found in her boogie board bag at Bali’s airport, but she has strictly maintained her innocence over the years.

Corby was sentenced to 20 years back in 2005, but her penalty was later cut after standard remissions and an appeal to the president. After nine years behind bars, Corby was released on parole in early 2014, but had to stay in Bali for the length of her parole, which finally ended this year with her deportation back to Australia in May.

Ever since her story hit international headlines back in 2004, Corby has been a national fixation in Australia. Everyone in large part seems to be have an opinion on the “did she or didn’t she?” question—which means a film starring one of Australia’s biggest actresses really could be wildly popular.

Post release, Corby has made it abundantly clear that she’s over being the center of a media frenzy, fleeing and pranking paparazzi, and has instead turned to Instagram to shape her own image—but she apparently hasn’t yet addressed the Kidman rumors on her preferred platform.
