Malaysia has called off search and rescue efforts for 62-year-old Singaporean kayaker Tan Eng Soon, 10 days after he was first reported missing following a group expedition in the waters off Mersing of Johor state.
Search efforts ended yesterday due to the lack of new leads, the Malay Mail reported, citing Johor maritime director Aminuddin Abdul Rashid.
Tan, a retired lawyer, and 57-year-old businesswoman Puah Geok Tin, whose body was discovered by a fisherman on Wednesday, drifted away amid strong currents on Aug. 8 while kayaking with 13 others around the Endau Islands.
The kayak they had used was discovered about 150km away in Kuantan of Pahang state. Puah’s body was found further up the coast, off Terengganu.
Puah’s body was repatriated following a postmortem in Terengganu’s Kemaman Hospital.
According to The Straits Times, dozens turned up for her wake in Tampines on Saturday.
The funeral procession will leave at about 1pm tomorrow to travel to the Mandai Crematorium Service, her family said on Facebook.
