Nearly 2kg of magic mushrooms were seized and 24 people, including seven Singaporeans, were arrested in a drug bust that took place across four different locations on Tuesday.
The bulk of the arrests (and mushrooms seized) came in Geylang Lorong 10, where 19 people were nabbed and 1.8kg of mushrooms were recovered, the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) said in a statement yesterday evening.
Photos released by CNB showed large groups of suspects being rounded up and made to squat on the floor. One photo also showed packaging intended for loose leaf tobacco that apparently contained the drug.
Two of Singaporeans arrested in Geylang are suspected of trafficking, CNB said.
Smaller amounts of the shrooms, which authorities refer to as “vegetable matter containing psychoactive substances” (yep, that’s what ‘shrooms are!), were seized at nearby Cassia Crescent housing estate, where another two Singaporean nationals were arrested.
Another 200g of the stuff in powder form was seized along with bottle of acetone, and a couple more bottles of acetone already mixed with the powdered mushrooms was also found.
The two arrested in Cassia Crescent were a 54-year-old man suspected of trafficking and a 33-year-old woman suspected of using the drug.
Three others allegedly linked to the 54-year-old were later nabbed at Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 and the Odeon Katong shopping complex, along East Coast Road.
Investigations are ongoing, CNB said.
Those found guilty could be jailed for five years with five strokes of the cane.
