Footage of two sports car drivers racing each other at high speeds along the wide, deserted road in Lim Chu Kang went viral last week. Accompanying the clip is another video of an assembly of cops catching up to the two drivers and confronting them.
Thrilling stuff. The thing is, the incident could have been staged for an episode of local TV show Crimewatch, produced by the National Crime Prevention Council and the Singapore Police Force themselves. Note how a police car can be seen by the side of the road in the first video, while a voice offscreen can be heard yelling “Cut! One more time because…” near the end of the second clip.
A screengrab of an Instagram story by a Facebook user showed a WhatsApp chat calling for Lamborghini Club Singapore (LCS) members to volunteer as spectators in a filmed re-enactment of an illegal race for the show held last Thursday night.
Based on the car models, the crew had been shooting a re-enacted incident from 2015 that saw two men in an illegal race along Seletar Link involving a Nissan GTR and a Lamborghini. The man behind the Nissan GTR (the car actually belonged to his wife) emerged victorious when he clocked a top speed of 219 km/h.
But neither of them really won — they’ve since been sentenced to jail and fined for multiple traffic offenses, while the two high-performance cars were confiscated by the state in 2017. The two cars have since been auctioned off earlier this month.
