An elderly woman has died after she suffered severe injuries when a taxi driver beat the red light at a busy Alexandra Central junction and rammed into her.
Police said on Saturday that the 66-year-old elderly woman succumbed to her injuries at National University Hospital, according to Channel NewsAsia.
Preliminary investigations revealed the 72-year-old driver apparently lost consciousness at the time of the incident and also hit a 33-year-old pedestrian in the crash, said The Straits Times.
Video of the tragic incident was captured by Facebook page SG Road Vigilante on Friday and has received 63,000 views as of press time.
In the video, the driver was seen driving an SMRT taxi while trying to enter the right-most lane. He then did a sudden switcheroo and went into the lane to his left, beating the red light and making an abrupt right turn into oncoming traffic from the other side of the road.
As the taxi made the right turn, the vehicle came into contact with pedestrians crossing the junction before the taxi hit the affected pedestrians.
During the whole incident, the taxi’s hazard lights were on.
SMRT’s corporate communications vice-president Margaret Teo said to Stomp that they are fully cooperating with the police in investigations.
“Our immediate priority is the well being of the injured and our care team is trying to get in touch with them and their families to render assistance and support,” said Teo in a statement.
Commenters on the video were largely concerned about the driver’s old age.
