Adding to its stable of concepts — Zouk, Phuture, Capital, and RedTail Bar — is Zouk’s newest, an intimate cocktail bar called Queens. As in the New York City borough known for generating legions of hip hop artists, including 50 Cent and Run-DMC. So naturally, the lounge is angled as a tribute to hip hop culture, helmed by Young Bartender of the Year nominee and hip hop lover Ashwin Raj.
Tucked away in a room within Capital, the 30-seater space is dimly-lit and stacked with hip hop records, from old school to contemporary. Plush lounge seats fill the place, with a series of artworks hanging from the walls and a bar counter stocking liquid libations.
But don’t expect it to be packed with young ‘uns looking to the dance the night away. Queens is more of a sleek hangout spot, open only to those in the know — you’ll either have to express interest in the bar at Zouk’s entrance or present your by-invite-only member card for access.
With categories like “DJ-ing”, “MC-ing”, “Breakdancing” and “Graffiti”, the menu of eight highlights includes Blaq Poet, a Jungle Bird rendition inspired by the DJ/rapper, made of pineapple rum, campari, pineapple and lime juice, espresso, and cardamom; Shaolin Swordsmen, an Old Fashioned version named after the Wu-Tang Clan; Willdabeast, a green pea-infused vodka with celery, lemon, and sugar; and North 6th Street, a fruity mix of mezcal, lime juice, beetroot, juice, and crème de cacao.
All signature cocktails go for $25, but spirits by the glass and classic concoctions are available as well.
