Soon there will be even more reasons to go to Jurong Lake Gardens – besides the newly opened Starbucks outlet that is pretty popular on social media of late.
Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects who are teaming up with local architecture firm Architects 61, the new Science Centre Singapore is located next to the water at Jurong Lake Gardens and incorporates five interlocking blocks that appear to be floating above the surrounding park grounds.
The center will also cater to visitors of all ages – not just for that one primary school excursion group – and is designed to provide unique opportunities for all Singaporeans to access science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), and to allow guests to interact with the surrounding gardens and lake.
Inspired by the natural landscape of the park, the center will also feature and mix of indoor and outdoor spaces like exhibition galleries, an observatory, archives, an outdoor interactive water play area, specialized labs, discovery trails, and even a sensory trail on the rooftop garden.
The new Science Centre will also be extending its opening hours for more night programming and offering “after dark” STEM exhibitions and programmes for adult visitors.
Sustainability and green energy are some of the key aspects of the new center. The Science Centre Singapore said that it aims to be a low energy building and will adopt green technologies and intelligent building management systems to reduce energy use.
Besides infrastructure and building features, visitors can also look forward to learning about sustainability practices such as vertical farming systems through programmes and exhibitions.
The center is set to open in 2027.
