Singapore is becoming a laughing stock over a poultry panic after Malaysia cut chicken exports.

Several people listed chickens for monstrous prices of up to S$1.2 million (US$876,000) on buy-and-sell platform Carousell in the past week after Malaysia announced it would stop supplying fresh chickens next month.

“Due to rising demands and low supply. Only one rare legendary one of a kind breed of chicken. Last chance to taste chicken before it becomes extinct for generations to come,” Nuclearbeast, who listed “rare limited fried chicken cutlet” for S$3,000, wrote in the description.

The 1.2 million-dollar listing belonged to a user who listed “limited” and “rare” fried KFC chickens. Another listed “limited edition” frozen popcorn chicken for more than S$60,000.

The list goes on with some listing plates of Hainanese chicken rice for more than S$1,000, a plate of even golden fried chicken for S$20,000 and even a box of four pathetic pieces of McNuggets for S$500.

They also have raw chickens that were at least S$2,000 for 2 kilograms. One listed 50 pieces of fried chicken wings coated with 24-carat gold leaf for S$10,000.

“Each wing is coated with our secret blend of 69 herbs and spices before being deep fried in oil as hot as hell. Lucifer himself would be proud,” _The_collector_ wrote.

Since Malaysia announced Monday that it was cutting back on chicken exports due to months of supply issues and rising prices, many panicked and cleared shelves of fresh chickens at Singapore’s supermarkets. Some sellers in wet markets are already facing shortages.

Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment Desmond Tan yesterday reassured everyone that there is enough for everyone, and there’s no need to hoard frozen chickens.

He said NTUC supermarkets have months of stock and more coming.

Singapore imports about 34% of its chicken from Malaysia, and gets others from Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil and the United States.
