Believe it or not, the Singapore Sports Hub is now six years old. Since its grand opening in 2015, the crown jewel of Kallang has built quite the legacy, playing host to a whole slew of concerts and large-scale live events. We take a look at some fun (and world record-breaking) facts that you might not know about the iconic venue.
It’s home to the Singapore Slingers
Since their inception in 2006, the Singapore Slingers have played their matches at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, right up until 2014 when they moved to the OCBC Arena just ahead of the 2014 ASEAN Basketball League season.
The 2017 International Champions Cup (ICC) was the first of its kind in Southeast Asia
You might remember when Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Inter Milan graced our shores (and the National Stadium) with their presence in 2017. This was the first ICC tournament in Southeast Asia since its inception in 2013. Following the success of the 2017 tournament, Singapore Sports Hub also hosted Atletico Madrid, Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain in 2018 and Manchester United, Inter Milan, Juventus and Tottenham Hotspur in 2019.
Jacky Cheung performed in Singapore six times across two years
He must really like Singapore. These six shows took place at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on his A Classic Tour concert tour between 2017-2018, and obviously, Singapore really likes Jacky too, because all of these shows were sold out.
We’ve waited decades to see Madonna and U2 (and it was worth it)
The Singapore Sports Hub has hosted numerous legendary acts, but the wait for these two, in particular, has been very long. Fans of the Queen of Pop had to wait for 30 years, while the Irish band finally made a stop in Singapore after 43 years. Both acts saw a massive turnout, with a whopping 25,000 fans showing up for Madonna’s Rebel Heart tour in 2016, while U2 sold out their show and added a second Singapore show in 2019 due to overwhelming response.
The venue has broken world records
Two Guinness World Records, to be exact, and these were both achieved at the Our People Our Music 2014 concert by the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO). The Guinness records were for the largest Chinese drum ensemble and the largest Chinese orchestra performance. Not a bad way to immortalize the very first concert at the National Stadium, we say.
