A Thai man was yesterday fined for trying to drive into Singapore with 213 kilograms of illicit egg, meat and seafood products.
Pukma Suwat, 37, was fined S$22,000 by a Singapore court nine days after he was intercepted at the Tuas Checkpoint by immigration officers,who found the delicious contraband in his pickup truck, immigration announced yesterday. The vehicle was registered in Thailand.
“[Singapore Food Agency’s] investigation found that the illegally imported products included chilled pork satay meat, soft-shell crabs, pork sausages and salted duck egg yolks. The illegal consignments were seized,” its statement said.
What sounds like the makings of a major gastronomic orgy proved a minor victory for enforcement of international commerce rules.
A low-resolution photo shared by the agency showed plastic bags containing the seized items strewn across the floor.
Food imports require a permit from the Singapore Food Agency and must meet food safety standards. First-time offenders face up to two years in jail and a maximum fine of S$50,000.
