Slapping on more lens onto a smartphone doth not make for better picture quality — just look at the lackluster Samsung Galaxy A9 with its rear quad-camera setup and Google’s Pixel 3, which can easily outshine the competition with just one lens at the back.

Over the past couple of years, the phones put out by Chinese tech company Huawei have been taken even more seriously as solid competition to other major Android devices, or even the ones put out by Apple. Last night, Huawei unveiled their flagship Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro series. Tech benchmark geeks would savor its specs, including the high-performance mobile AI processor Kirin 980 with up to 8 gigabytes of RAM, which translates to faster Wi-Fi, GPS accuracy, processing speeds, and performance.

On to other highlights that might make you switch to a Huawei:

  • Samsung Galaxy-esque curved screens (a 6.4-inch OLED for the Mate 20 Pro and 6.5-inch LDC screen for the Mate 20)
  • 128GB internal storage, with the ability to expand it to 256GB with a nano memory card
  • USB-C port (no headphone jack, sadly)
  • 3D face unlock and an in-display fingerprint sensor
  • Because it’s 2018, notches. But way classier than the Pixel 3, with a slim notch on the Mate 20 Pro and a dewdrop notch on the Mate 20

  • Multiple Leica cameras at the back with three different focal lengths — one 20MP lens for ultra wide shots, one main 40MP camera, one 8mp telephoto camera. Huawei’s AI will auto detect subjects and correct colours if need be
  • A massive 4200mAh battery that supports fast charging on the Mate 20 Pro, along with something called the Wireless Reverse Charge. Get this; the phone can charge other devices that support wireless charging

Huawei’s Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro will be available in Singapore from Oct 27 at the recommended retail prices of S$998 and S$1,348 respectively. A sales launch event will be held at Causeway Point in Woodlands (for some reason), where customers can receive a premium gift set worth up to $470 with ever purchase of the new phones.
